Trailmakers

UI / UX

Company: Flashbulb Games

Trailmakers places you in an open world with tools for constructing complicated vehicles to aid your exploration. In collaboration with creative director Mikkel Thorsted I had lots of fun helping with ideating, designing and implementing the UI / UX. The challenge was to give the player the most intuitive possible approach to building a 3D vehicle on a flat screen – similar to building with Lego, but without the physical aspect.

Apart from the building interface, I also worked on the inventory for the many blocks you find on your journey, which have to be sorted and stored in a way that makes all parts easily accessible.

Pioneers UI
UI ideation – camera orientated 3D indicators inside 2D buttons for rotating blocks around X, Y and Z axes respectively. Compensation for the lack of depth perception on a normal monitor.

Trailmakers UI animated tour
UI ideation – radial vs classic UI, each have different qualities. Also optimized for optional keyboard navigation. The UI is a sketch rendered on top of an old state of the game.

Trailmakers UI sketches
UI ideation – sketches of structure, look and feel of the inventory, as well as visual brainstorming on the 'mirroring' UX, making it faster to build symmetrically.
